I have lots of kids whose first language is Spanish or Chinese or one of eleventy billion other languages. I understand that they have trouble with certain aspects of spoken and written English. What I don't understand is the kids who have spoken English their entire lives and then can't write a sentence.
For example, Suzy has a vocabulary assignment. She writes the word, the part of speech, and the definition. She gets all of these directly from the book, so she should have no problems. Then she writes a paragraph using all of the vocabulary words. She writes things like...
... he formed a profess (did she just not say that was a verb meaning to claim belief or allegiance to? And "profession" wouldn't have worked in the sentence, either)
... When we finished talking about religion, I secular to go get some food.
