Ice Cream Party

Today we had our second ice cream party. It went well--very well, if I do say so myself.

Ryan made mint chocolate chunk gelato and dark chocolate gelato. That was quite fun as he was making custard and then two ice cream makers running... And so, so delicious. We briefly considered locking the doors and hiding and pretending that we weren't home so that we could eat it all.

Getting set up...
Menu:
  • grilled hamburgers (5# ground chuck--we could have used 6#)
  • grilled hotdogs (14 Hebrew National--we could have made 7 more at least)
  • grilled portobello mushrooms
  • buns (white and wheat)
  • various condiments
  • sliced tomatoes
  • lettuce (iceberg is still my favorite for burgers)
  • cheddar and American cheese
  • chips and ranch dip
  • dark chocolate gelato
  • mint chocolate chunk gelato
  • vanilla bean Blue Bell ice cream
  • homemade vanilla Blue Bell ice cream
  • chocolate fudge
  • dark chocolate sauce
  • caramel sauce
  • apple cinnamon sauce
  • mini M&Ms
  • pretzel M&Ms
  • mini candy bars (Whoppers, Kit Kat, Hershey, Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, York Peppermint Patty)
  • maraschino cherries
  • peach sangria
  • limeade
  • beer
  • water
  • root beer (I forgot to offer it because it was in the fridge)
Everything was a hit. Note to self: make quadruple batch of sangria.

Peach sangria, adapted from CB2's blog:
  • Bottle dry white wine (Rioja)
  • 1/4 cup sugar melted into
  • 1 can peach nectar
  • 1/4 cup Grand Marnier
  • 1/4 cup vodka
  • Juice of lemon
  • Peach slices (I got some awesome small, ripe, local peaches)
  • Lemon slices
  • Key lime slices
It was this kind of carnage we surveyed at the end of the afternoon/evening:

The kids loved the toys we have and there was some dancing on the table, but only by the under 4-foot crowd. They also, apparently, loved the drapes. All in all, a wonderful afternoon with friends. I think that the summertime ice-cream party is officially in our routine.


Notes for next time:
  • More meat wouldn't hurt (see above)
  • Grilling and then putting in chafing dish worked well
  • Get some sodas
  • Put beers, root beers, sodas in bucket (that I have and forgot about)
  • Larger container for frozen limeade and make more (I ran through 2 containers)
  • More sangria (4 bottles of wine would not be too much)
  • Figure out some way to keep ice cream out on the counter, at least for a little while
  • Make more chocolate gelato
  • Only one kind of vanilla is okay (maybe backup chocolate?)
  • 4 bags of ice is good for making ice cream and drinks
  • consider making sangria with club soda to stretch it and make it sparkly when it's warm in the house (invariably it's extra hot and the a/c can't cope whenever we have guests)
  • I think we had between 25-30 people so we needed more ice cream dishes
Another sign of a good party: Ryan never got any of his chocolate gelato--other than a few licks of the ice cream paddle after he finished making it. There are maybe three scoops left of the mint chocolate and there were no hot dogs or hamburgers

I never would have thought to host an ice cream party....but how fun!
